The Rubenow Monument in the Hanseatic city of Greifswald was ceremonially unveiled on October 17, 1856 in honor of the mayor of the city and co-founder of the University of Greifswald (today the Ernst Moritz Arndt University) Heinrich Rubenow (around 1400-1462).
The memorial consists of a slender pinnacle and shows a rich pictorial decoration of the history of the university. The four monarchs Duke Wartislaw IX stand in four niches. of Pomerania, Duke Bogislaw XIV of Pomerania, King Friedrich I of Sweden and King Friedrich Wilhelm III. from Prussia, to whom the university owes a special debt of gratitude. The models were created by the sculptor Wilhelm Stürmer.
The coats of arms of Sweden, Prussia, Pomerania and Greifswald were placed under the niches, including a relief of the mayor of Greifswald and university founder Heinrich Rubenow. The sculptor Bernhard Afinger designed the figures of the scholars who sit at the corners of the monument as representatives of the four faculties: Johannes Bugenhagen for theology, David Mevius for jurisprudence, medicine is embodied by Professor Friedrich August Gottlob Berndt and as a philosopher he is the Freedom poet Ernst Moritz Arndt represented.
With a total height of 40 feet (= 12.55 meters), the Rubenow memorial is the largest free-standing pinnacle made of galvanized cast zinc in Germany.
