Today's Käppnersteg is the third building on this site. The first bridge at this point was a reinforced concrete arch construction from 1911. In the middle an Art Nouveau tower house adorned the footbridge. This bridge was blown up in 1945. In its place, a wooden structure was built in 1947, which had a significantly higher apex than the steel structure that followed in 2005.
The name "Käppnersteg" goes back to Paul Käppner, the treasurer of the city's former beautification association, who initiated the first building.
