In the 1960s, a sand and gravel pit was created in Hummelsbüttel, which was followed by further sand pits in the following years. After the end of the dredging, the pits were filled, i. H. used as a landfill, or poured into "garbage mountains. One of the pits remained partially open and forms the starting point for Lake Hummelsee, which is often used as a recreational area and bathing area.

A sand and gravel pit was created in Hummelsbüttel in the 1960s, and more sand pits were added later. The pits were filled, i. H. used as a landfill, or even dumped into "garbage piles". One of these pits remained partially open and was the basis for today's 8 hectare Hummelsee.

At the foot of the former rubbish heap, in the middle of fields, trees and bushes, lies the Hummelsee. It was created by quarrying sand and gravel and is now a paradise for waterfowl. Parts of the shore and the shallow water zones are protected and may not be entered. The lake is also a good area for anglers: carp, tench and zander cavort in the water. And the Hummelsee is also popular with model boat lovers: when the weather is nice, a number of small boats dart across the water.
Around the lake there is a pretty circular path, about one kilometer long, which is also easy to manage for families with small children. If you bring a picnic, you can make yourself comfortable on a meadow by the water. It is also allowed to grill there. Bathing is forbidden, although the water quality is good. However, there are efforts to convert the lake into a bathing lake in the future.
