The picturesque village of Saaksum is built in two half rings around the church, which stands in the middle of the mound.
On the mound stands the Reformed Church, which was rebuilt in 1849. Its predecessor was a church dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria according to a 1588 deed. A memorial stone at the bottom of the tower reports that it was 'ghemaket' in 1550. In 1709 the tower was restored. In 1845 it was decided to build a new church due to dilapidation, whereby the tower remained standing. The new church was built in 1849. A short church path leads from the church to the village, which lies entirely along a circular road.
