Wachendorf Castle is located in a large park with old trees. First mentioned in 1190. Wachendorf was originally the bailiwick of a noble lord over ecclesiastical property. From this a medieval moated castle developed to protect this manorial rule. Today the castle consists of an unusually large, three-storey mansion with a six-storey residential tower and buildings of the farmyard scattered across the site. Then there are the chapel, surrounding walls and the remains of the former bastions, ramparts and moats. The ocher-colored plaster and the red sandstone structures create the impression of a mighty baroque palace. The castle has been completely changed since 1780. At that time, Freiherr von Solemacher rebuilt the castle for his representative duties. In the overgrown castle park there is also the tomb of the last residents of the castle, those of Malinckrodt. Nice castle, unfortunately you cannot visit it but you can get married there.
But everyone has to decide for himself whether he wants to come in like this. Hihihi ...

Castle complex in Wachendorf (Mechernich municipality)

          Translated by Google •

Wachendorf Castle is located in Wachendorf, a district of Mechernich in the Euskirchen district of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The castle was built in its current form around 1780. In 1883 it was last extended or rebuilt according to the model of a maison de plaisance. During this renovation work, the impressive main staircase and spacious halls were built. Today the building is an unusually large three-story manor house with around 60 rooms, a high mansard roof and a six-story central tower, partly surrounded by the remains of a formerly impressive fortification with ramparts and moats.

Wachendorf was first mentioned as a bailiwick in 1190. On the site of Wachendorf Castle there was a knight's seat with a keep-like tower, originally with a late Gothic spire. This keep has been preserved as a central projection in the castle, now with a mansard roof. At least the basements of the central tower and significant sections of the walls of the north-western half of the manor house come from the medieval castle.

In the early 16th century, the castle came into the possession of the noble Palandt family through marriage. Johann von Palandt was one of the most important knights of the Jülich dominion. In 1628, witch trials under the castle lord Marsilius III von Palandt led to the deaths of 16 people. From 1687, the property was inherited by the von Hatzfeld family, who sold it in 1768 to Anna Maria von Hallberg, née von Holtzweiler, the mother of the Electorate of the Palatinate's ambassador Heinrich Theodor von Hallberg. In 1780, Wachendorf Castle was acquired by the Bavarian Major General Adolph Freiherr von Ritz. In 1877, the Euskirchen district administrator Johann Peter Schroeder sold the property and the land to Baron Solemacher-Antweiler, who had the castle rebuilt to its current form. His son sold the property to Paul von Mallinckrodt in 1896. The castle is now privately owned by his descendants, the Müller von Blumencron family. It serves, among other things, as a wedding venue for the Mechernich registry office and as a Zen temple.

Nice to look at, from the outside (you can't get in).
By the way, it continues through a picturesque chestnut alley.
(Picturesque especially for flowering in May).
Be careful with the forest section that follows later: the paths do not end in just one place in the undergrowth.
The path above could not be found without the navigation system.

Very well-kept castle and the facility is tip top. Great motive.

Unfortunately, you can only see a small part of the castle from the outside. The interior is private. The castle seems to have been a castle once, the wall can still be seen like a moat (?)

The castle is very picturesquely situated on the outskirts of Wachendorf in the North Eifel. It was built at the end of the 18th century and is still surrounded by former fortifications and moats. A long chestnut avenue leads halfway around the village to the castle. The castle is privately owned. You can get married here at the registry office or rent it as an unusual wedding location.
