Archaeological excavations have shown that the prominent castle hill of Landsberg was already fortified in Slavic times. Slight remains of a wall can still be seen in the terrain. When layers of earth were removed in the 1990s, small remains of the wall of the high medieval castle complex were uncovered, which showed plaster scratches. In general, the dimensions of the castle are difficult to determine due to the former quarry operation on the Kapellenberg (in the area of today's rock bath).

In the 12th century Landsberg belonged to the Wettins. When Conrad the Great of Meissen retired to the monastery on the Petersberg in 1156, he divided his possessions among his three sons. Dietrich received the Ostmark or the Mark Lausitz, to which Landsberg belonged. 1174 Dietrich was mentioned as "Comes de Landsberc". Consequently, the castle will have been completed or at least under construction by this time.[2] Dietrich belonged to the close circle of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa. He took part in the Italian campaign of 1176/77 and in the peace negotiations in Venice. The close connection to the emperor also explains the design of the castle chapel. Double chapels were only built in the close vicinity of the Hohenstaufen imperial family. Based on the construction history that has been handed down, it is assumed that the castle was completed in 1184, the year Dietrich died. As an important follower of the emperor, Dietrich most likely had buildings erected in his castle that corresponded to the high artistic level of the castle chapel.

Nice double chapel. From here you have a great view of Landsberg and its districts.

The double chapel Sanctae Crucis dates from the 12th century and is the remnant of Landsberg Castle and is now the town's landmark.
