Here's a little background story about this fountain:The Donkey Fountain on the Old Market Square commemorates a legend popular among the people of Halle. In ancient times, Emperor Otto visited the city of Halle. The streets along which the emperor was to enter were liberally strewn with roses to provide a dignified welcome for the distinguished guest. But in those days, the Saale River was flooding, and the emperor and his entourage had to take a different route to the market square. The citizens stood by the side of the road, awaiting the emperor. Then they saw the miller's boy approaching with his donkey. They found this amusing and laughed at the donkey who walked on roses.
