Hiking

The donkey fountain was built in memory of this event at the foot of the Alter Markt. It has had its current appearance since 1913 and was extensively renovated in 1997. As early as 1480, there is said to have been a tubular well at the foot of the former Michaelis chapel, which was decorated with a male stone figure in 1593. In 1868, this was replaced by a simple zinc fountain before today's donkey fountain, the secret "treasury of Halle", was built thanks to a generous donation from Halle's merchant Martick.
