Hiking

The Donkey Fountain was erected at the foot of the Old Market in memory of this event. It has had its current appearance since 1913, and was extensively renovated in 1997. As early as 1480, a pipe fountain is said to have stood at this spot, at the foot of the former St. Michael's Chapel, which was adorned with a male stone figure in 1593. In 1868, this was replaced by a simple zinc fountain before the current Donkey Fountain, the secret "landmark of Halle", was erected thanks to a generous donation from the Halle merchant Martick.
