massive monument at the camp site of the Duke of Brunswick's troops

    Translated by Google •

In the summer of 1809, with just over 2,000 soldiers - half of them mounted - Friedrich Wilhelm von Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Oels made his own way around 500 kilometers through an area controlled by Napoleonic troops. The so-called “Black Group” because of their uniforms was a Braunschweig Free Corps that fought on the side of Austria against Napoleon. The task: to interrupt supply and connection lines between the French and their allies. After a decisive defeat for the Austrians, the Freikorps was cut off from any support. The "Black Duke" fled from the French across northern Germany and also made a stop in Syke. This is where the memorial stone on the B 6 stands today.
