The explanation panel near the grandfather fir in the city forest of Freudenstadt proclaims that this is the largest fir in the Black Forest. It is striking how much bigger the big-tree fir is compared to the trees in the area. Also, the explanation panel has a response at the grandfather. On the Schöllkopf, where there is now forest throughout, there used to be a farm, the Schöllkopfhof. The today's Großvatertanne was formerly a Weidtanne, thus a single standing tree in a meadow. The other trees in the area were planted much later, after the Schöllkopfhof had been abandoned.
