The Barbarasiedlung in Munich was built from 1909 to 1918 for employees of the military clothing office; it is also known as the Barbarastraße military housing complex.

The Barbarasiedlung is located in the Schwabing district in the Munich district of 4 Schwabing-West on a triangle formed by the Barbara-, Infanterie- and Schwere-Reiter-Straße. A small private road leads through the settlement. The one- to four-family houses with front and utility gardens can be assigned to the home protection style; the plans come from Georg Besold, a preliminary design by Richard Beetz.

The garden town character of the small settlement is emphasized by the uniform concept; the use of different house sizes and house shapes - some with wooden cladding, others in timber frame construction - with changing roof shapes gives her a relaxed impression.

The entire system is under ensemble protection.

In Schwabing - actually Munich's bohemian and trendy district - the Barbarasiedlung with its enchanted front and kitchen gardens and the different house sizes and shapes looks like a remote village in the city. The small settlement was built at the beginning of the 20th century for craftsmen from the Bavarian Corps Clothing Office and their families.

Today mainly civil servants live there, as the ensemble-protected area is still the property of the Free State of Bavaria. The last Munich horse-drawn carriage is also located in the middle of the garden city. Susi Schimmer's teams are the only ones permitted in the English Garden.

If you are looking for Munich before it developed into a world-famous and expensive city; if you want to explore the rural, original Munich, you should also stop by here!
