The Fürstenberg ruins lie above the village of Rheindiebach amidst picturesque vineyards.

The castle was founded in 1219 by Archbishop Engelbert I of Cologne. With the construction, the archbishops of Cologne attempted to limit the growing influence of the Rhenish Palatine, who, however, soon gained feudal power. In 1314 the imposing building changed for the second time to the feudal lords: the king of the Holy Roman Empire pledged them to the Electorate of Mainz. The front tower castle was thus under the rule of three different electoral principalities within a century. After severe destruction in the course of the Palatinate War of Succession, it remained ruinous. Changing owners, including the current owner, always managed the surrounding winery.
