When the Second World War came closer and closer to the Sauerland region, the pastor of Oberveischede, vicar vicar Gerhard Reker, placed the congregation under the special protection of the Blessed Mother in a celebration of the Virgin Mary; and as a token of thanks, he vowed on behalf of everyone a new Marian shrine for the village of Oberveischede.
After the end of the Second World War, the villagers laid the foundation stone for the Marienkapelle on the Rennberg on October 11, 1945, which was inaugurated on October 15, 1947. In 1997 the chapel was extensively renovated on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. With a procession of lights from the Marienkapelle to the local church, the Oberveischeder have been commemorating the inauguration of their sanctuary every year since October 15, 1989.
