The castle cannot be visited from the inside. There is a restaurant with a small beer garden in the forecourt of the castle. This is freely accessible. From there you have a very good view of Attendorn. There is also a hotel in the castle.

Historical: Built in the year 1222 high above the south bank of Attendorn on a mountain spur Cologne castle served the land security of the Duchy of Westphalia and secured the "Heidenstraße", an important military and trade route, on a direct route from Leipzig via Kassel to Cologne led and who crossed the Bigge at Attendorn. The aristocratic family "Schnellenberg" came from the knighthood in the following period until the late 16th century, most of the time with the castle. Since 1594, it has been owned by the Rhineland-Westphalian noble family Fürstenberg, which had it rebuilt and expanded in the Renaissance style. It is worth noting that one of the first youth hostels in Germany was established between 1911 and 1928 in the Upper Castle.
