In 1171, Cistercian monks from Amelungsborn in the Weserbergland founded a monastery in Althof. Eight years after it was built, it was destroyed.
According to legend, Nikolas von Rostock wanted to find a new place for the monastery. He wanted to wait for a sign from God and said: “Where I hunt the first deer, the new monastery should be.” He was lucky in the hunt, but the animal died on swampy ground, of all places. The prince was at a loss. Suddenly a swan rose from the reeds and called out loudly "dobre, dobre". Then the prince knew that the best spot had been found and the new monastery was built there in 1186. .Today, the extensive monastery complex with its well-preserved monastery wall invites you to linger.

In 1186, monks from Amelungsborn, Westphalia, founded a Cistercian monastery, which would soon become the most important city in Mecklenburg. The monastery area with its impressive buildings, above all the Doberan Minster as a former monastery church, still dominates the face of the place. On the English lawn you can roam through the picturesque monastery park with the almost completely preserved monastery wall, the ossuary (visit on request), the granary and the farm building, which provides a backdrop for various events for an incomparable atmosphere. The Doberaner Münster is today one of the most important medieval testimonies of faith, power and wealth in the Baltic Sea region and is part of the European Route of Brick Gothic. Barely touched by iconoclastic events, periods of renewal and the turmoil of the World Wars, it holds the richest medieval decor of all Cistercian churches in Europe. Magnificent altars, precious paintings and carvings, tomb sculptures and stained glass from now seven centuries can be found here. The high altar is considered the earliest winged altar of European art history, the sacrament tower, the altar of the altar.Sources:
