The Maiden's Tower is the attraction of Zichem. On June 1, 2006, part of the fourteenth-century Maiden's Tower collapsed. A disaster, because the monumental keep could no longer be restored to its original state. The huge hole was filled with gray brick. Since then, you can climb the tower on weekends and in July and August every day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. At the top you have a beautiful view over the Demer valley. According to tradition, Rosita, the daughter of the lord of Zichem, was imprisoned in the top room of the tower. She was in love with a common soldier and that was not to her father's liking. Rosita had to and would remain a virgin, hence the name 'Virgin Tower'. The Maiden's Tower is freely accessible at the following times
    From March 15 to August 31, every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
From September 1 to October 31 : on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am. until 5 p.m.
During the autumn holidays every day from 10 am to 5 pm

The Maiden's Tower has stood on the banks of the Demer since the Middle Ages. Mr. van Zichem had the prestigious keep, a defense tower, built on his castle grounds. The construction of the tower took no less than 10 years.

The tower has had many functions over the centuries: from prison to cowshed, and suffered badly under the Spanish cannons during the Eighty Years' War. It is therefore not surprising that in 2006 a quarter of the Maiden's Tower eventually collapsed.
The Maiden's Tower was too bad for a full restoration: the monument had long been a ruin of which no one really knew the original appearance. The tower was therefore reinforced, renovated and made accessible to the public again. Today you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the Demer valley in the maiden's tower.
