The Müglitztalbahn has been running from Altenberg to Mügeln since October 1890. The beautifully preserved but empty station building still bears witness to these old times.
The construction locomotive of the contractor Hänsel was allowed to make the first descent. However, the last stretch of track from Geising to Altenberg was not yet finished, just as there had been many construction delays throughout 1890. A very, very cold month of March stopped construction. A trick helped: the provisional terminus was simply called Geising-Altenberg. Before that, however, other sections were passable.

Hiking
Originally a narrow-gauge railway that ran relatively close to the Müglitz, it fell victim to a flood. Eventually the railway was rebuilt to standard gauge and rerouted higher for safety reasons.
