In 858, the noble lady Liutgart gave her paternal inheritance and founded the monastery so that the noble families of the country had the opportunity to give their daughters a Christian education. The monastery is the primal cell and the beginning of Bassum, which was then called Birsina. In Europe, the Bassum Abbey is considered to be the oldest still existing canonical monastery.
