Great in the middle of the city a large pond with benches around it, to take a rest, bevelled by beautifully prepared houses.

Up until the end of the 12th century, the present-day Small Pond and the Large Pond existed as a pond complex that was created by the accumulation of the city stream (Blue Flood). It was not until 1594 that a dam was created that separated the two ponds. The large pond now has an area of approximately 10 hectares. Fish farming in particular was at home here. The island in the pond was artificially heaped up in 1720/21 and served the "joyfulness" of the courtyard. The concrete bridge built in 1925 replaced the ferry that had been running until then. Today the island zoo is on the island. Here the visitor can experience native animal species.(an excerpt from: thueringen.info/altenburg-der-grosse-teich.html)

Always worth a trip, the Kastanienallee and the Inselzoo invite you for a walk. And there's an ice cream at Parkhotel's Italian.
