There has been a Masonic lodge in Altenburg since 1742. She called herself "Archimedes to the three drawing boards". From 1802 she had the existing box house on Johannisgraben built by the architect Heinrich Wilhelm Schmidt. It was inaugurated in 1804.

In the 19th century the lodge had up to 170 members. With the income obtained from membership fees, it primarily promoted social causes, including in favor of the Altenburg grammar school, the community school, the boys 'and girls' school and the child custody facility. Over 30 foundations and numerous non-profit associations have been established in the lodge house.

In 1935 the lodge was dissolved by the National Socialists. During the GDR era, the property was owned by the city of Altenburg and, after the fall of the Wall, belonged to the college for social education.

The Grand Lodge of the Old Free and Accepted Masons of Germany, based in Berlin, has been the owner of the house since 1992. She had the house renovated as a modern event venue and since 1999 she has also tried to reestablish the Altenburg Freemason tradition. Today the house is managed by Logenhaus Altenburg GmbH in Starkenberg.

The Logenhaus Altenburg is a meeting place built in 1804 in Altenburg, Johannisgraben 12. It is a listed monument.

The building is a one-storey hall building parallel to the street with nine window axes and a large hipped roof. A two-storey central risalit with four Tuscan half-columns, entablature and gable is in front of it as the entrance. In the pediment there is a relief with a figure of Archimedes seated and an inscription of the last words attributed to him: "NOLI TURBARE CIRCULOS". The interior of the house, which dates back to the construction period, has been partially preserved.
