There are about 10 islands and island-like reeds in Lanker See. The lowering of the sea level has increased the number of islands by the fact that shoals now lie above the water surface, rather than making islands into peninsulas. In addition to Appelwarder, the latter also happened with the tip of the largest peninsula on the west side, which is still shown as an island in the 1877 map.
