The Ruhrort House, popularly known as the Thousand Window House, was built in 1922 as an administration building for the mining company Rheinische Stahlwerke in Duisburg-Ruhrort, Ruhrorter Straße 187, on the filled-in part of the shipyard harbor. Wikipedia

Is a building worth seeing - with its many windows

"The so-called "Thousand-window house" stands on the former harbor island of the filled-in ring or shipyard harbor and forms the gateway to Ruhrort from Duisburg.

It was built in 1922-23 as the administration building of the Rheinische Stahlwerke after a much-noticed architectural competition.

Not unlike Peter Behrens' old Düsseldorf Mannesmann administration building, the building is a monumental block under a large roof, surrounded by uniform rows of windows, hence the proverbial name.

The representative claim is reflected in the portal situation with driveway and canopy, but also in the care with which decorative details were inserted in the masonry and under the roof approach. Alongside the Schifferkinderheim, the Thousand-window house is the second important example in Ruhrort of so-called brick expressionism.

The originally open inner courtyard was closed with a glass roof during the modernization by Harald Deilmann in 1996. Today, several companies and an outpatient eye clinic are housed here."
