The St. Servatius Church in Selent is located directly on the beautiful Selenter Lake, in the heart of Holstein Switzerland. It was built around 1197 and is the northernmost church in Europe dedicated to St. Servatius - a real highlight! It is also the patron church for the surrounding estates of Lammershagen, Wittenberg, Rastorf and Salzau Castle.

Originally designed as a late Romanesque hall church, over the centuries it has developed into an impressive Gothic church with a cruciform floor plan. Particularly worth seeing are the valuable Gothic winged altar from 1470 and the panel painting from 1566, which is entitled "Adoration of the Shepherds" and was created by the Dutch painter Pieter Aetersen. A visit is definitely worth it.

In the north of Holstein Switzerland, on Lake Selent, stands the approximately 800-year-old St. Servatius Church in Selent. It was first documented in 1197, making it the oldest church in the northern Plön district.

St. Servatius Church is the northernmost church in Europe dedicated to Saint Servatius (Latin for "the saved one"). Presumably, Dutch settlers brought his veneration as patron saint to the country, having settled there by Count Adolf II of Schauenburg after the battles with the Slavic Wagrians in the 12th century.

Saint Servatius was bishop in Tongeren in the 4th century and was buried in Maastricht Cathedral on May 13, 384. Even today, the community celebrates this day with the so-called "tower blowing," as the tower is also the oldest part of the church.

The partly unhewn granite boulders embedded in the wall, as well as the baptismal font, bear witness to the church's founding during the time of the missionary Vicelin.

It was initially built as a small late Romanesque hall church, but by the early 13th century had received its exceptionally magnificent Gothic vaulting for a village church, whose historic paintings were reconstructed in 1975.
