In past centuries the old tree served as a court linden tree.
For this purpose it was surrounded by several court stones, narrow benches made of granite. The judges sat on these in front of the assembled community when they tried people who had become entangled in guilt.
Unfortunately, only one of these benches remains. It is located at the park entrance on a cement base.
According to a patent from Ferdinand II von Biberstein from 1667, “blasphemers, swearers and cursers…” were chained to the court linden tree using neck irons three Sundays in a row and thus pilloried in front of all churchgoers.
Until the turn of the century (19th/20th century), the remains of the neck iron with which the perpetrators were connected could still be seen on the pillory linden tree.
