Hiking

This sculpture is a work by the sculptor Carl Burckhardt (1878-1923). It depicts a striding Amazon leading a horse by the reins. Burckhardt was familiar with the Amazon motif, as he had already created five relief panels on the subject of Amazon battles at the Zurich Kunsthaus in 1914.

Hiking

The sculpture depicts a striding Amazon leading a horse by the reins. It is located on the Mittlere Brücke in Grossbasel. Burckhard was familiar with the Amazon motif, as he had already created five relief panels on the theme of Amazon battles at the Zurich Kunsthaus in 1914. The Basel Amazon is his last work. It was created at the same time as his Knight St. George on the stairs to Kohlenberg. The Amazon was commissioned by the Basel Art Association.
