Spalenberg had several names before receiving its current name. A separate article on altbasel.ch on the Spalen district provides information on the name "Spalen" (spalen_spalentor.html). The alley was first documented in 1230 as vicus spaleae (Spalengasse). The address prope spalon (near Spalen) was also common as a simple place name.

These names date back to a time when Spalenberg was an unpaved path between a few wooden houses leading up to the Franciscan monastery in Spalen. The name Schmiedgasse also appeared because of the local blacksmiths, and the nearby Rosshof was likely the reason for the name Rossberg in 1403. The middle Spalenberg was also called Pfluggasse in the 16th century.

By the 19th century, a division had crystallized. From Hutgasse to Gemsberg, people referred to the Lower Spalenberg. From Gemsberg to Heuberg, the common name was "Oberer Spalenberg," and from Heuberg to the old city gate at Petersgraben, the name "Beim Spalenturm" was used. From 1861, all three parts were officially combined to form Spalenberg.

One of the many nice neighborhoods in Basel. With beautiful old alleys and some staircases. It's worth taking a while to look around.
