In the 19th century, traffic and industrialization changed Basel: in 1832, a steamship docked here for the first time. Eight years later, the first railway in Switzerland ran on the Saint-Louis–Basel route, and a station was opened within the city walls in 1845. Soon, trains were running daily to Paris and Frankfurt.
