    Peter's Church, Basel

The Peterskirche is a sacred building in the Swiss city of Basel. It is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul and has been used as a Protestant Reformed Church since 1529 after conversions and renovations.

At this point there was already a previous church building, which probably came from the 9th century. By 1233, the then church was expanded and renovated as a parish church and monastery. The Basel earthquake of 1356 caused severe damage to the building and it had to be rebuilt. The choir was redesigned.

Peterskirche was probably founded in Carolingian times as a burial church. The name of the Totengässlein, which leads up to it from the city center, still points to this function today. In 1035 it is said to have become a parish church. The Canons' Monastery was founded in 1230/1233 and as a result the basic features of today's building were created. The tower on the north side of the choir was built from 1270 and received its ridge turret in 1501/1502.

Early on, the 16 canonicates were converted into professorships at the University of Basel, which was founded in 1460. The chapter survived the Reformation and was only formally dissolved in 1813.

A spacious nave with whitewashed walls is separated by two aisles by light sandstone arches. The walls are richly decorated with picture cycles and murals. In the southern side aisle is the work Entombment of Christ, created around 1830, and in the "Keppenbach Chapel" the well-preserved mural is the Annunciation to Mary (around 1400). The pulpit was created around 1620 and is attributed to Franz Pergo.

The organ, which dates back to Johann Andreas Silbermann, houses a 1968 work by Neidhart & Lhôte. The sanding tool has 32 registers on three manuals and pedal. The tracts are mechanical.

The Peterskirche is a sacred building in the Swiss city of Basel. It is dedicated to St. Peter and serves after reuse and renewal since 1529 as a Protestant-Reformed Church. The east-west oriented church is located on a rock in the Grossbasel old town, where the Petersgasse and the Kellergässlein meet.

At this point there was already a predecessor church, which probably came from the 9th century. Until 1233, the former church was expanded and renewed as a parish church and canon monastery. The Basel earthquake of 1356 caused severe damage to the building, it had to be rebuilt. The choir was redesigned.

The main part, called "Leutkirche", was planned before according to the guidelines of the mendicant churches and completed before 1388. The choir stalls are dated to the year 1494.
