At the Lesum dyke between the motorway and Burger Bridge, the dyke association began to raise and strengthen the dykes in its area after the horrors of the storm surge in Holland in 1955. During the storm surge in Holland on February 21, 1953, over 2,100 people drowned. The flood in the German bay caused no major damage. But the storm surge on December 22, 1954 also brought maximum water levels in the Bremen area, as never measured before. At the Lesum dyke the water was up to the top of the dike.

You drive all the time on the edge of the dike with a great view of the river and the vast landscape.
