The Lesum barrage has only been in existence since the 1970s. It ensures that the hinterland of the Lesum, Wümme and Hamme is protected from river flooding during storm surges. At night, however, it is likely that crossing the river via the barrage will not be possible because passage for high-masted ships and boats must always be guaranteed. This is why the bascule bridge is often raised at night.

It opens for boat traffic during the day as needed, otherwise the upper part of the bridge is accessible at any time, whether on foot, by bike or on rollerblades,...
From 10 p.m. it is the other way round, now it is open for boat traffic and only every hour on the hour for 5 minutes! It is very annoying if you miss this time.

A very good turning point for cycling tours. So you can experience both banks of the Lesum. Both are very sexy. On the southern side you can also give a great throttle!
