The approximately 13.5 hectare area is considered the best studied urban biotope in Bavaria with more than 30 plant and animal species endangered in Germany or Bavaria. Used as a lean pasture until the 1930s, it then served as an extension of the "passenger train repair shop" founded in 1906. Turnouts were installed there and used track parts temporarily stored, later the area was also a shunting area. The plant was closed in 1980 and became the property of the City of Munich. The preserved listed halls of the repair shop are now integrated into a chic commercial area. The track storage was preserved as a compensation area for urban nature: "On the remaining tracks, weathered hall floors and gravelly storage areas, a mosaic of different vegetation locations with dry and lean characteristics was created" (building reference), an important habitat for many rare insects, birds and plants .

Dogs are allowed on a leash. Unfortunately, many dog owners "in the great outdoors" do not seem to be obliged to collect the legacies of their companions. Over time, this leads to over-fertilization and damage to the nature conservation areas. So it would be nice if civilized behavior were practiced out here too.
