Fort Leopold

Fort Leopold was built between 1841 and 1845. It is buried in the southern slope of the Lazarijberg, about 400 meters outside the city. Due to its remarkable tower-shaped construction, it can fire in all directions. The fortress had a dual mission. On the one hand, to prevent the enemy from occupying the plateau in front, an ideal place to shell the city. And on the other hand protect the northern city front by harassing the enemy from behind. The entrance to the fortress was protected by a wide and deep dry moat. On top of the fortress there are two earthen battle platforms and towards the city there are two brick batteries.

During the First World War, the Germans used the fortress as a storage and lodging place for shorter periods. After the war, a Frenchman started a mushroom farm there and an orchard was planted on the surrounding ridge. During the Second World War, the occupiers used it again as a storage space. Today Fort Leopold stands empty.
