Hedge Row Trench Cemetery is one of three cemeteries in the immediate vicinity of The Bluff battlefield. The two other cemeteries are 1st. D.C.L.I. and Woods.
Hegde Row Trench Cemetery is named after a trench in this sector. This cemetery was started in March 1915 and used until August 1917.
Hedge Row Trench Cemetery has an unusual arrangement of graves: they are situated around the Cross of Sacrifice. After the war it became apparent that it was impossible to distinguish each individual grave from others due to the explosion-swept earth, although it was known who was buried there. hence the grave monuments bear the inscription 'Buried somewhere in this cemetery' or 'Buried elsewhere in this cemetery'. In the English language: 'Known to buried in this cemetery' or 'Buried elsewhere in this cemetery'. It was therefore decided to place the gravestones in this arrangement for eternity.
