It's worth it because it's just a piece of Hamburg's history that still lives today - a little journey through time. In summer there is also a welcome cool-down, because it is nice and fresh in the tunnel. ;)

The 1911 opened St. Pauli Elbtunnel - in contrast to the existing since 1975 New Elbtunnel also known as Alter Elbtunnel - underpasses the Norderelbe on a length of 426.5 meters and connects with two tunnels, the northern harbor edge at the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken with the Elbe Island Steinwerder.

extraordinary building. Directions from the south side (Steinwerder) Sundays / Feiertrags, because then in the harbor is little traffic. From the viewpoint Steinwerder beautiful view from Altona to the Elbphilharmonie on Hamburg.

A truly great building ... and very few tourists know this place, let alone suspect it here🤔
Crossing by bike (or on foot) is actually free and a welcome cool down there in the summer in the heat!
    An experience especially for children!

Very worth seeing highlight, which ensures in summer when driving through or running through for a short cool down. A journey through time, which simply belongs to the Port of Hamburg.

Quaint and aboslut worth seeing building. It shows which engineering achievement was already possible at the beginning of the 20th century. Impressive. It is good that in the meantime (as of 06.08.2019) the tunnel for motor vehicles is closed. Thus, the use is reserved exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists who are allowed to use the passage for free.

Not a secret - but still a discovery is the southern side of the "Old Elbe Tunnel". The lifts for people and bicycles run around the clock. Great view of the Elbe, the landing stages and the "skyline" of Hamburg. At times, a small food truck has opened there.

The east tunnel of the old Elbe tunnel was opened just after 10 years of renovation.
Until the beginning of June 2019 you can now visit the "Original", the western tube, and the renovation. Thereafter, only in 5 years, both tubes are rehabilitated. Now go and go through both.
