Tips

  • The green reed sandstone is mined here to this day. As early as the Middle Ages, builders / artists used the Abtswinder reed sandstone for its high quality and unusual color, as it was easy to work with despite its very good durability.
To this day, this stone not only characterizes the house facades in Abtswind, but also some artistic stone carvings. So z. B. a beautiful sandstone portal from 1747 the entrance to the town hall.
Balthasar Neumann also prefers the Abtswind sandstone for his buildings. Both he and the sculptor Ferdinand Dietz came to Abtswind personally to choose suitable stone blocks. Dietz manufactured, among other things. the figures of saints on the Old Main Bridge in Würzburg. Other famous buildings are the Bamberg Rider and the Dresden Zwinger.
