The historic town hall is not only known for the contract concluded here, which ended the Thirty Years' War. Here was also the cradle of the modern Netherlands. Because in the course of the peace of Münster the Spanish-Dutch war was ended.
The Gothic town hall was almost completely destroyed in World War II. With great foresight, the Münster residents had brought the entire paneling, the wooden ceiling and the inventory of the Friedenssaal to the Wöbbel Palace in Lippe. However, the artistically decorated windows, the Gothic facade and the fireplace in the south wall were irretrievably destroyed.
Already in 1948 it was decided to rebuild the town hall, however, so shortly after the war there was no money to implement this plan. The citizens of Münster, however, did not want to accept this and urged that their famous landmark be built up soon. They collected money from private individuals and companies, organized a "town hall lottery" and thus contributed to the reconstruction.
However, the reconstruction based on the original was not entirely uncontroversial. The architects involved in the construction of the historic old town were accused of "historicization". Basically, they are also "replicas" of historical buildings. However, the people of Münster were and are proud of their "historic" town hall, which also symbolized the resurrection of a city almost completely destroyed in the war.

The historic town hall of Münster is one of the very special eye-catchers of the Prinzipalmarkt and is one of the city's landmarks. It is known far beyond the city limits in particular for its so-called Peace Hall. Once the building's council chamber, the hall got its name as a result of the peace negotiations held in Munster, which were successfully concluded in 1648 and ended the devastating Thirty Years' War. The peace agreement is of great historical importance for another reason.

The historic town hall not only houses the tourist information, no you can also visit the peace hall here. Costs though 2 € entrance is for Westphalia but yes almost a must. In the photo you only see the entrance hall.
