Salzstrasse is the oldest trading street in Münster and also a busy shopping street with several historic buildings and sights. Salzstrasse is 550 meters long. Since 1977, 400 meters of it has been a pedestrian zone.

Salzstrasse was first mentioned in 1346 under the name "vicus salis". Originally, Salzstrasse was a narrow field path. Long-distance traders used this as a rear access to the farm buildings of the stately homes on the "Alter Steinweg". The northwestern section of the street between Lambertikirchplatz and "Alter Steinweg" was known as "Salzstiege" until the 18th century, but also bore the current name of Salzstrasse. The rest of the street between Ringoldsgasse and the Servatiitor was known as Servatiistrasse.

In the 1980s, Hermann Fechtrup, as Münster's senior city manager, played a key role in the redesign of Salzstrasse.

After Ludgeristrasse and Prinzipalmarkt, Salzstrasse is one of Münster's most frequented streets. This result is the result of the pedestrian frequency measurement that the economic development agency carries out once a year.
