Gerhard Richter's work is in the center of the building under the crossing dome. It consists of three parts: the pendulum, the base plate under the pendulum and the two gray double mirrors. They form a unit with the room.

Foucault's pendulum is a non-magnetic metal ball weighing 48 kilograms with a diameter of 22 centimeters, which is attached to a 3 millimeter thick stainless steel cable in the crossing dome. It oscillates over a circular slab of greywacke, a 380-million-year-old sedimentary rock that is curved equivalent to the movement of the pendulum. The base plate is surrounded by a wreath with a 360-degree angle scale, divided into twelve steps. Plate and ring have a diameter of 5.60 meters (level of vibration: 4 meters).
In the foreground the pendulum above the oscillating plane, behind one of the two double mirrors

A magnetic field drive in the center of the base plate ensures the uninterrupted, even movement of the pendulum. Over the course of an hour, the plane under the pendulum rotates approximately 12 degrees counterclockwise. A full 360 degree rotation takes about 30 hours. This makes the rotation of the earth visible, which was first demonstrated in 1851 by the French physicist Léon Foucault in a pendulum experiment.

In front of the two wall surfaces of the crossing there are two vertical rectangular glass panels, each grouped in pairs, measuring 6 by 1.34 metres. The fronts are coated with a vaporized mirror, the backs are gray enamelled - two strips in an identical dark gray, the others in two different light gray tones. The glass panels reflect the interior of the church and the glass panels in front of the opposite side of the wall, the movement of the pendulum and the visitors.
