Best Hikes to Memorial to the Frozen Children

Tips

  • This is a strange "memorial", I consider this unbelievable:
    > First built in 1993
    > No year of the transaction
    > No names of the children
    > Compulsory education was not created until the 19th century, it would have to give a documented process
    > In which school did they want to go over the plateau? To Drügendorf (5,5 km)? Unterleinleiter would be much more logical? Edit: The cath. Dürrbrunn belonged until 1815 to the parish Drügendorf; then only after Unterleinleiter.

OK, I did a quick research, quote:
Legend of the "Frozen Children of Dürrbrunn"
South of the village is located in the direction of the Eggolsheimer district Drügendorf the 1993 erected monument to the 6 so-called "Frozen Children of Dürrbrunn", which are said to have come here on their way to school in a snowstorm to death. The year is not mentioned. The district archivist Georg Knörlein has researched that this event did not exist. Rather, on January 20, 1694, two sisters, coming from near Stuttgart, fell into deep snow and one of them, Anna Maria Grosmännin, died of the consequences. Their funeral is documented in the matriculation book of the parish Niedermirsberg of the years 1662-1744 on page 167 under "funerals" together with the attendant circumstances of their death.
Compulsory education was not enforced in the Kingdom of Bavaria until 1802, and the parish registers and chronicles of the region do not detect any corresponding deaths of children.

(Note from me: Compulsory education was introduced in 1802 in the Electorate of Bavaria. However, the local area was part of the Bishopric of Bamberg, which was dissolved in 1803 and came to Bavaria.Bavaria became kingdom in 1806.)
