As in many other places, the tower was erected as a memorial to the German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. However, one thing differentiates the massive tower from its countless namesakes throughout Germany: from the beginning it was planned as an observation tower and can still be climbed inside it via 111 steps. From the viewing platform you have a magnificent view of the vast surrounding countryside.
