  • This is what the baukunst-nrw editorial team writes:
"Buldern Castle, located in the district of the same name in the city of Dülmen, is a neoclassical castle complex that is now used as a boarding school. The complex was originally owned by the Lords of Buldern until, after numerous changes of ownership, it was acquired by the von Romberg family in the 18th century. They had the previous building, which probably dates back to the early 17th century, extensively remodeled. By 1945, the complex was already being used as a student dormitory, and in 1958, a boarding school for boys and girls was finally established in the castle.
The complex consists of the neoclassical manor house, several outbuildings, and a landscaped garden. The manor house, dating from 1838, is a plastered building with a rectangular floor plan, ending on its northern facade with two tower-like pavilions at the corners. The north side is also characterized by a pedimented central projection with a pillar-supported spire. The manor house is characterized by a large, open-plan balcony. To the south, a brick wing is attached to the manor house, which is still part of the previous building from the 17th century. The outer bailey to the southeast also largely survives from the 17th century. The gatehouse is marked with the date 1678.
The 19th-century outbuildings include two barns and a brick watermill. Inside the manor house, the 19th-century wall and ceiling paneling in the dining room have been preserved, as has a 17th-century fireplace.
The landscaped garden was probably laid out together with the manor house in the 19th century and is characterized by large bodies of water and several preserved decorative structures. The park was redesigned between 1910 and 1920.
