Cycling

The Alte Fahrt is a disused branch of the Dortmund-Ems Canal. Due to the increasing ship traffic on the canal, various side branches had to be built in 1929, just 30 years after it opened. This meant that larger ships in particular could use the side branches of the canal and avoid each other. Many years later, the main canal was widened at key points and the so-called Second Journeys were dismantled or separated from the main canal. Many of the former side branches are now closed biotopes and invite you to explore on foot or by bike.

Away from parking options, a very quiet part of the landscape. You might encounter a dog walker or an angler here. The path is often covered with turf and at most gravel. So not exactly comfortable, but still doable, just not a race track.
