The Aachen Gate was built at the beginning of the 14th century in connection with the city's development and fortification of Bergheim. It protected the long-distance trade route from Cologne to Aachen. With its central two-storey rectangular building and three-quarter round towers on the outer corners, the Aachen Gate is one of the most powerful city gates in the Rhineland.

Cycling
In the 16th and 17th centuries the gate was repeatedly badly damaged. Around 1800 the facility was converted into a prison. Renovations took place between 1911 and 1914 and 1925.
