The level tower is a landmark of Neuwied and actually a pure jewelry architecture.
A wide boat staircase connects to the level tower. There are markings on the side of the stairs that show the flood levels of the past years.
Beneath the masonry of the level tower is a level system for the dike, which is not intended for shipping, but indicates when the dike needs to be closed.

With the construction of the flood protection dike in 1928-1931, Neuwied's view of the Rhine underwent a thorough change. The dike protects the city center and its surroundings from flooding. It is 600 meters long, the dike wall from Schloßstraße to Friedrichstraße with its two large gate passages and the slender level tower, which is connected to a wide boat staircase, which is square in light and dark strips. While the level tower itself is a purely decorative architecture and is considered an advertising landmark of Neuwied, there is a level system for the dyke, but not for shipping, hidden beneath it, hidden in the masonry.
