The Heidmoor lowland is owned by the municipality of Seedorf, the district of Segeberg and the Schleswig-Holstein Nature Conservation Foundation. It is to be preserved, secured and restored through measures such as biotope promotion, waterlogging, fallow land and extensive use as a valley moor. The goals are to protect the soil and water balance, to regenerate it as a habitat for the characteristic flora and fauna, to promote the ecosystem of the moor as a whole, to protect and develop the breeding population of endangered meadow, reed and waterfowl, and to protect the landscape in the valley moor complex. In order to achieve these goals, measures such as watering the NSG area, extensive grazing and care to support the marsh tea have been carried out in recent years.

The NSG Heidmoor is captivatingly beautiful. The young Trave runs through here, fallow deer and many great egrets live and in the north-west there is the beautiful Bahrenbrook, which is a fine area.

The Heidmoor lowland between Blohmnath and Glasau/Sarau in the district of Segeberg is part of the floodplain of the upper Trave. The Ice Age origin lies in the silting up of a flat reservoir in the drainless depression of the rounded ground moraine. What remained was a raised bog, today's Birkenmoor. The meadows and pastures surrounding this remainder of the moor today were created in the past by moor cultivation and drainage measures. The original fen landscape can still be seen after flooding. The radical amelioration of the entire area at the end of the 1930s brought the end of the moor system. Even the remainder of the raised bog was intensively drained by side ditches and branch ditches, and the large areas of marsh tea growing there were cleared. Since 1941, 70 ha of the Heidmoor lowlands have been under nature protection, which NABU has looked after since 1983. The entire area of the Heidmoor lowlands covers 370 ha.
