Cozy mountain inn right below the summit of the Großer Rachels. The highest mountain hut was closed in 2017 due to structural defects, but after some restoration work, the hut with the huts host Rudi Holzapfel and Sigrid Kick was reopened in August 2018.

The Waldschmidthaus is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm during the summer season.

After a refreshment, it is worthwhile to walk the approx. 50 to the abyss to take a look at the Rachelsee.

The Waldschmidthaus is located just below the summit of Großer Rachel. The Rachelschutzhaus owes its name to Maximilian Schmidt, also called Waldschmidt. The writer from Eschlkam (1832 - 1919) dealt, among other things, with the Bavarian-Bohemian neighborhood and used real settings for his stories. Built in 1912 by the Spiegelau Forest Association section, the Waldschmidthaus was privately owned in 1920. Today it is owned by the Free State of Bavaria and offers hikers a stop right on Rachel in the summer months.
Please inquire about opening hours in advance.
