The Waldschmidthaus is located just below the summit of the Grosser Rachel. The Rachelschutzhaus owes its name to Maximilian Schmidt, also known as Waldschmidt. The writer from Eschlkam (1832 - 1919) was interested in the Bavarian-Bohemian neighborhood, among other things, and used real locations for his stories. Built in 1912 by the Spiegelau forest association section, the Waldschmidthaus became private property in 1920. Today it is owned by the Free State of Bavaria and is currently being renovated. The Waldschmidthaus is currently closed until further notice, so there is no opportunity to stop for refreshments!
