The Waldschmidthaus is located just below the summit of the Großer Rachel mountain. This mountain refuge owes its name to Maximilian Schmidt, also known as Waldschmidt. The writer from Eschlkam (1832-1919) explored, among other things, the Bavarian-Bohemian relationship and used real locations as inspiration for his stories. Built in 1912 by the Spiegelau section of the Bavarian Forest Association, the Waldschmidthaus became privately owned in 1920. Today, it is owned by the Free State of Bavaria and is currently undergoing renovations.
