Cozy mountain inn directly below the summit of the Großer Rachel. The highest mountain hut was closed in 2017 due to structural defects, but after some restoration work, the hut with the hut hosts Rudi Holzapfel and Sigrid Kick reopened in August 2018.
The Waldschmidthaus is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the summer season.

The Waldschmidthaus is located a little below the summit of the Großer Rachel. The Rachelschutzhaus owes its name to Maximilian Schmidt, also known as Waldschmidt. The writer from Eschlkam (1832 - 1919) dealt among other things with the Bavarian-Bohemian neighborhood and used real locations for his stories. Built in 1912 by the Spiegelau Forest Association, the Waldschmidthaus came into private ownership in 1920. Today it is owned by the Free State of Bavaria and in the summer months of recent years offered hikers a place to stop for refreshments directly on the Rachel.
The Waldschmidthaus is currently closed until further notice.
