The typical gnarled Schachten trees, often many centuries old, as well as arnica and mat grass can also be found on the Hochschachten, which covers an area of 9.5 hectares. The plants develop a very special charm and offer structurally rich habitats for numerous species of insects, birds, reptiles and bats, some of which are very rare. In 2018, for the first time, a herd of red cattle grazed on the Hochschachten, also known as the Großer Schachten.
