Hiking Highlight
The Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen (Switzerland)
An interesting day trip from the Black Forest or Lake Constance leads to nearby Switzerland: the Rhine Falls and the beautiful medieval towns of Schaffhausen and Stein am Rhein.
The largest waterfall in Europe, the Rhine Falls, offers an impressive natural spectacle. At a width of 150 m, the Rhine (coming from Lake Constance) crashes from a height of 23 meters over the rocks.
The average runoff is 750 cubic meters per second.
Highly recommended is an exploration of the high castle Laufen. The castle complex offers an impressive view of the Rhine Falls and the rocks in the middle of the river. The way down to the Rhine leads over stairs and through a tunnel to various lookout platforms to the boat landing stage. The rock in the Rhine can be reached and climbed by ship. Or you can just bring to the other side of the Rhine to the castle Wörth, from where a nice tour along the banks of the Rhine and over the railway bridge back to the starting point.

In the middle of the mighty waterfall, a mighty rock floats the masses of water. The Rhine Falls Rock.

The way is unfortunately liable to pay, but it is also worth the price. The views are just spectacular.

Simply impressive!
For people who are not so good on foot, there is a lift for parts of the way

On the way from Lake Constance to Basel, the Upper Rhine is confronted with multi-layered rocks that narrow the riverbed and that the river overcomes in rapids and a waterfall, the Rhine Falls.
The Rhine Falls has a height of 23 meters and a width of 150 meters. The Kolk in the impact zone has a depth of 13 meters. In the middle of the Rhine, 373 cubic meters of water per second fall over the rocks in the Rhine Falls (average summer runoff: about 600 m³ / s). The highest discharge was measured in 1965 with 1250 cubic meters, the lowest outflow in 1921 with 95 cubic meters per second. Also in the years 1880, 1913 and 1953, the runoff was similarly low.
The Rhine Falls can not be overcome by fish, except from the eel. [1] This snakes sideways (outside the river bed in the countryside) over the rocks.

Great destination for the whole family. When the weather is nice and the amount of water is large, the waterfall is very impressive

The Rhine Falls is a unique natural spectacle. Especially recommended in the spring in thaw.

Dreamlike waterfall. It is worth visiting the castle Laufen to get directly to the waterfall. Best to come in the late afternoon.

We only chose the crossing, which makes the trail possible in the first place. Here you will not get wet and yet get another perspective.

No flop.
We were there on 30.03.19 at noon today. This is the best time to take pictures. Then the sun is very cheap. Admission is moderate with 5 francs (analogous to about 5 euros). However, it will be very crowded during the high season. We were lucky today ... obviously it was not a season yet. Parking is expensive on the spot (€ 5 the first hour, then € 2 each additional hour).

The boats offer round trips or a Rhine crossing. They run every 1/4 hour and bring you very close to the roaring falls.
