Fan Hir is not the most attractive or famous of the Welsh peaks here in the Bannau Brycheiniog/Brecon Beacons. However, Fan Hir is part of the eastern ramparts of the Black Mountain. It has a very steep east face and is separated from its higher neighbour, Fan Brycheiniog, by Bwlch Giedd. It is also a designated Welsh Hewitt ad Nuttall.

A stark reminder to ensure you pack enough layers, gloves to protect your digits and that all-important wholly hat. Weather can be unexpected when navigating this type of terrain (regardless of how many checks on the weather reports), on this walk I had to use the ridgeline as my navigational feature when the fog came in to approx. 10m and darkness fell (the spare-spare head torch came in very handy.

I had a one-man tent with me and a full sleeping kit so more than prepared for a night on the hill, but the weather was terrible (high winds and snow) and worsening, so I thought best to keep moving and head down. As the ridgeline was the navigational aid, I slowed my pace and layed up, with navigation checks every 10-15min.

Stunning views over the east, especially in the morning with the rising sun.
