The route from here up and around Llyn Y Fan Fawr and Back must be a strong contender as one of the Wales’s most scenic walks. This is just the old trout farm on the Afon Sawdde on the start of your walk really. When I say old, it is old in structure but still being used to breed fish and is a nice half way marker on the way to Llyn Y Fan Fach itself. The nicest thing about this part of the walk is that there are abundant photo opportunities as you have the river, mini waterfalls and the main escarpment of Fan Fach in front of you,

The lake is overlooked by several prominent mountain peaks, especially Picws Du and Waun Lefrith. Waun Lefrith is formed from the sandstones and mudstones of the Brownstones Formation of the Old Red Sandstone laid down during the Devonian period. Its southern slopes are formed from the hard-wearing sandstones of the overlying Plateau Beds Formation which are of upper/late Devonian age.

Heading towards the little trout farm you are flanked by gushing mountain streams and some great views of the distant peak of Pen Y Fan. You will reach Llyn Y Fan Fach in about half an hour - the walk is suitable for most people but if you want to ascend further to the top then allow about 5 hours and suitable clothing and footwear. It is here at the lake that as ancient legend has it a beautiful lady still lives!
