Peter Klöckner (1863-1940) was a large industrialist who had grown up in the steel trade. He owed his rise to the takeover of modern smelters and mines, which he successfully renovated. The second marriage was an occasion to let himself be given an exclusive building site in the Duisburg city forest near the city limits, the non-commercial use of which he had to expressly guarantee by contract.

The model for the Hartenfels house, built in 1911/12, was probably the massive country houses of the castle specialist Bodo Ebhardt.

In principle, it is a two-storey residential building with a central hall, representation and living rooms. The initially simple west facade was soon supplemented by further winter gardens and oriels. A special feature is the tower, which can be seen from afar, and which afforded a view of the industrial landscape in the west and north.

After Klöckner's death and the family moved out after the Second World War, the house was occupied with up to 250 bombed-out and refugees. The interior suffered a lot at that time; the house was finally neglected. It was only secured and externally restored in the 1980s.

Unfortunately, Haus Hartenfels has had its prime. Redevelopment urgently required!

Very nice old walls in the middle of the forest. It is a listed building and unfortunately has its best times behind it.
